THE OUTCASTS
Jiro told me about this 1985 documentary about a biker gang from suburban Britain. A Shane Meadows film waiting to happen.
Koyaanisqatsi
A 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke. The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse stock footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music.
SABRA CADABRA
I promised Bucks Fizz I'd make a Sabbath mix for the uninitiated. So here are the 10 songs I like the most, plus my Sab story...
When I was 13 I got a summer job mopping floors in a warehouse with the sole intention of earning cash to satisfy my hunger for heavy metal. Clutching my first week's wages of £10, I biked down to Our Price in Stokport town centre and set about choosing a tape to buy. I couldn't make my mind up and it took me AGES to decide... so long in fact that the sales staff suspected I was shoplifting and called the police. The cops came, searched me, found nothing, yet still I got reprimanded -- though the only crime I was guilty of was loving heavy riffs. Anyways, the album I finally settled on was Black Sabbath's eponymous debut. I distinctly remember being completely seduced and scared shitless by the evil-sounding storytelling. Fact is, Satan is fucking cool. Especially when you're 13...

That's a photo of my then boss and me clutching a fistful of cassettes.

Warmer daze
Some heart-warming music and film to take you away from the cold...
"we found a bunch of old footage in our grandparents cupboard at the start of the year... it is so beautiful to watch them when they were our age living and loving each other... with the little children... surfing out on the beaches... the playfulness in their eyes... which they still have now... their faces and bodies have changed a little, yet they are exactly the same in every other way.
Congo (Belge)
Was hipped to Congo (Belge) while perusing a bookshop with my buddy Rob Doubal recently. Filled with digitally-enhanced prints from the Belgium Congo from around the turn of the century, this is some truly next level Heart of Darkness shit - photographic evidence of the stark horror Belgium inflicted on its colonies. The most powerful images in the book are not available online, but seriously, if you can get your hands on this, I urge you to spend some time with it.
Powers of Ten
Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe.
ZOO KID by PEGZ
My sisthren Pegah Farahmand just made her directorial debut with this charmer for the up+coming ZOO KID, a new signing on House Anxiety Records.
Blame it on my wild heart
Considering the amount of love I have for Stevie Nicks and for YouTube, I can't believe I haven't seen this before... It's Stevie singing while she's getting made up for a Rolling Stone shoot. Thanks C-wow.
Lord knows it would be the first time
The COMPLETE, UNCUT and HARD-TO-FIND instrumental version of The Smith's "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want", as performed by The Dream Academy. It was used for the "museum scene" in John Hughes classic film "Ferris Beuller's Day Off".
