Stratos Dance Club

Just stumbled across the YouTube channel of Stratos Dance Club, one of San Diego's hottest clubs in the 1980s. They've uploaded a bunch of great videos from back in the days when New Romantics, punks and breakdancers bopped together.

The Rick James look-a-like contest. Only one guy in it.




The Prince Look-a-Like contests were super erotic.

I've had this on repeat all morning. It's a 1986 cumbia classic titled "Jamas" (Enough), here sung by the Peruvian Princesita Mili and her awesomely attired backing band, Pintura Roja (Red Painting).

In the mid-1980s, when Eddie and Rick were at their height of their powers, their egos blinded by a blizzard of cocaine and sycophants, this video probably seemed like a good idea.
It reminds me of another ill-judged musical venture: "Outstanding" by Andrew Cole.
