Saartjie Baartman's booty wasn't that big by Khoisan standards, but, in the eyes of her South African slave masters, her behind was behemothic. Sold as a circus freak - advertised as the Hottentot Venus - she was forced to entertain Europeans by shaking her naked buttocks. Saartjie died mired in drugs and prostitution in Paris, but suffered further humilation after her death when her body parts were preserved and put on display in a museum, where they remained on show until the mid 1980s. Her remains were eventually returned to South Africa a couple of years ago after a diplomatic appeal by Nelson Mandela.
