DEAR GOD 2.0

God bless The Roots. Still giving me goose bumps after 17 years in the game:

CEREBRAL BALLZY

My old friend Jamie-James Medina has brought Cerebral Ballzy, a young hardcore band from Brooklyn, over for a short UK tour. They're playing the Old Blue Last on Monday. Come down if you're in town. It should be a laugh.

Listen here.

PUNJABI DUDES DANCE OFF

Like a mouthful of broken teeth

“My photographs of the derelict shopfronts record the last moments of the Jewish community in the area – the bustling world of the inter-war years had been moved into the suburbs, and the community that stayed behind was less identifiable. In the nineteen eighties they were just hanging on, some premises had been empty for more than five years. Like a mouthful of broken teeth, a boxer’s mouth that had been thumped, with holes where teeth once were.”

HEXKRAUT I

Desiderata

(Latin: "desired things")
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world .
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

HYPE WILLIAMS... BOOM!

Voodoo Village contributor and close friend, RAWLS GRABFELDER, has finally got some of the recognition he deserves. His band are the New Band of the Day on The Guardian's music website this week. To quote: "This enigmatic and elusive group take you forward into the past... The missing link between Ariel Pink and Aphex Twin."
The guy is a proper artist, ignoring the fashionistas and doing what he loves. Respect, bro.

DOUCHE DOUCHING

BRITISH FOLK

My friend Queenie - aka James Pearson-Howes - has just published a book of photographs about the British Folk scene. This 32-page limited edition paperback looks at the darker and more surreal side of folk customs in the UK. Designed by Ditto Press, it will be be stocked at Motto Books in Berlin, The KK Outlet and Concrete Hermit in London, and the Inventory shop in Vancouver, Canada. More shops are to be confirmed. The book will also be available to order online on his website by the end of the month.
